On Modern Design Teams

Design teams are increasingly become more autonomous and self-organizing in their work. The value cast across a design team is now taking shape as role definitions become more attuned to the workflows across research and design. Remaining agile not just in process, but in our domains stands the greatest chance to building an adaptive team, capable of flexing into new territories with experietial excellence.

The value of a UX Researcher is becoming increasingly evident on design teams. As teams continuously discover value in the role, the practice will further intertwine with existing design workflows. Designers practicing human-centered are a leg up when it comes to sourcing new insights from the discovery phase of design. The first step in embedding research is for all designers to level-up into a scientific framework for decision-making.

Modern Product Designers exhibit a skillset that extends design into the business realm— connecting value from the organizational mission down, to roadmaps and down to the feature levels. This role requires the experience of a design that champions design in meaningful ways. Product designers are an integral role on a product team, working to build continuity from research into design, connecting and building interactive prototypes, interactions, visual design and the ultimate handoff to development.

Consider how you team design team is structured. Are the proper domains fulfilled? To what end is your team reflective and adaptive of the demands by way of your workflow. Is your team working in domains such as service design without that skillset properly staffed? As design teams progress forward, it is integral that we flex out designer skillset to bridge the gaps and thrive in our diversity of knowledge and domain expertise!
