I Want to Build a Home

free verse

I want to build a home,
where strangers come
from near and far,
where new relationships
meet for the first and last,
there will always be
a space for the dwellers,
an extra seat for the passerby
a table set for the outcasts.

I want to build a home,
the fridge will be stocked
with homemade iced tea
for the sticky humid summers,
a stack of wood by the fireplace
for the long cold winters,
the pantry full of snacks
a bowl of fruit on the table by
the vase of seasonal flowers.

I want to build a home,
the doors are never locked,
the windows always open,
a temperate breeze flows,
spreading the warm scent
of chocolate chip cookies
fresh out of the oven,
the tunes of Frank Sinatra
can be heard from every room.

I want to build a home,
where it takes an hour
just to say goodbye,
lingering smiles that
never seem to fade,
where people take
the long route to say,
we were in the area
and thought we’d stop by.

I want to build a home,
where people gather,
exchanging life experiences
where the intersection
of differences shake hands,
it can be for a short break,
or a long stay, either is fine,
I’ll welcome you with
brewed coffee, or a mimosa,
depending on the occasion.
