If You Call Them Your People

They should know that you care.

If you call them your people, I hope you pour into them. I hope you mention their name when you are in a room full of opportunity. I hope your relationship flows like a gentle river, that there is a balance to the giving and taking. I hope you don’t expect your people to do things that you would not do for them — for support is a two-way street. I hope you see that a relationship or friendship of convenience is not actually a relationship or a friendship at all.

If you call them your people, I hope you pay attention to them. Pay attention to the words they are saying and the ones that they are not. Pay attention to their communication or their lack thereof. Pay attention to what ignites a sparkle in their eye — and what seems to take their light away.

If you call them your people, I hope you show up for them. I hope you are there for birthdays and holidays and random weekends when they need you there the most. I hope you show up with cookies when they’re feeling blue and champagne when they’ve just achieved something truly magnificent. I hope if they’re having a terrible day, you stay with them to watch their favorite television show until the wee hours of the morning. I hope you text them, letting them know that they’re on your mind and that you love them, too.

If you call them your people, I hope you tell them you love them. I hope you never keep your love locked up. I hope you never cease to say it or show it. I hope they never doubt, not for one second, that you love them — that they know this is true because of what you do and what you say and how you act. They know because it would be impossible not to.

Above all else, if you call them your people, they should know that you care. They should know it within the very fiber of their being. They should feel it within their heart and the core of their bones. They should know it is as sure as the rising and setting of the sun. They should know it is as constant as the crashing of the waves, as steady as the notion that time keeps moving forward.
