Technical writers in Sri Lanka and their community

We created history on the 26th of April 2018!!! We had our very first Technical Writers (TW) meetup in this beautiful island called Sri Lanka. It was awesome to meet, great, and eat with like-minded individuals and share our experiences.

There were two talks lined up for the day. They covered the importance of content and quality in technical writing, and how General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) affected technical documentation.

Later on, we divided into teams and discussed the challenges we face as technical writers, the current trends and technologies, the career path in technical writing, the importance of training and certification, etc. It was interesting to hear new ideas from everyone that participated and understand how they managed content in their organizations.

All in all, we are so glad that we created a TW community in Sri Lanka (let’s call it the TWSL community). At WSO2 we have 16 technical writers and we love hanging out with each other and sharing our experiences. Yesterday, we realized that there are more than just 16 individuals who are passionate about technical writing and that’s such an awesome feeling :).

Having the first meetup or forming this community did not happen overnight. The tech writers at WSO2 worked tirelessly to make this dream a reality. Many individuals helped us in various ways. It was amazing to see how things came together on the 26th of April 2018.

The technical writers at WSO2 had a plan but everyone made sure each item on the plan was executed to completion. I have worked in teams previously, but have not seen this level of enthusiasm (you need to remember that all these extra tasks had to be done while balancing the work tasks.. and that is not easy). Those who managed the social media sites did a great job on building up the community and spreading the word and those who managed the meetup administrative tasks made sure everything went as planned on the day of the meetup.

Now we plan to grow together with our TWSL family, learn together, understand new trends, and much more. The aim of all the technical writers in Sri Lanka is to take technical writing to the next level.
