A Brief History of the Snowboard

Master electrician Matt Saggese supervises the operations of Saggese Electric LLC, his electrical installation and repair business in Fishkill, New York. Outside of his work, Matt Saggese enjoys snowboarding during winter.

The first recorded instance when a person stood on a sled was in 1917. Vern Wicklund, a 13-year-old lad, rode on a modified sled down their backyard in Cloquet, Minnesota. He patented his concept 20 years later but produced only a few models of his product.

In ed by Sherman Poppen, an engineer from Muskegon, Mi, created a prototype of the modern snowboardchigan. He was trying to develop a toy for her dar that she can use to ride on the snow. Poppen cross-braced two skis and attached a string at the front end of the board for steering. His model was called “snurfer,” which is a combination of the words “snow surfer.” Poppen produced and sold about one million pieces of snurfer in 1970.

The sports equipment manufacturer Brunswick Corporation acquired Poppen’s snurfer and licensed it. By the end of the 1970s, Brunswick Corporation was able to sell over 70 million pieces of snurfer.

The snurfer has since gained popularity and spread rapidly throughout the snow-covered countries in the world. More manufacturers have produced the snurfer. Later on, the name of the snurfer was changed to “snowboard.”
