The one about Brexit

I had planned for the next article in my road trip series to be about the different cars I had considered, how they compare to each other, and which car I eventually picked. That will still happen……

To my Mom

Today kicks off the start of nurse’s week. How appropriate that this year we end nurse’s week, and the next day celebrate our mothers! This year more than any in my memory I feel such deep appreciation for my stay at home nurse- my mom. She has been by my side though every discomfort in the hospital, the late nights at home, every tear, and every level of discomfort I have felt since my surgery. I truly cannot fathom the patience and the selflessness she has shown me.

Two days before my surgery, this magical nurse mother of mine went to the hospital with my oldest sister, only to find out that she needed emergency surgery on her abdomen. The surgery was at midnight, and my parents returned with my sister around 9:00 that same morning. They went to sleep for a few hours after returning home, only to wake up and nurse my sister while preparing the house for my surgery (which meant removing anything that was hazardous to a person on crutches). That night, Sunday, my parents stayed with my sister for the entire night, administering to her the proper pain medicines and any assistance she needed. Fast forward to the next night, Monday, which was the day before my surgery. I was a bundle of nerves and anxiety and Mom and Dad must have stayed up with me until 1:00 in the morning before I fell asleep- only to be woken 3 hours later to leave for the city for my operation.

My mom has demonstrated for me in this time such self-sacrificing love in all that she does. I joke that she has a sixth sense- the moment I open my eyes in the middle of the night, she almost immediately wakes up and asks me what I need. How does a person do that? She’s clearly a superhero or something, because there was a night while I was in the hospital that she did not get a second of sleep, and I know this because she was awake with me while I was in pain. She didn’t again get to close her eyes until the night following, and yet functioned perfectly and helped me in any way she could for that entire day.

Not to mention the food she makes me! My pain medicine gives me some nausea, which renders me rather uncharacteristically disinterested in food. However, this superhuman nurse chef that I am blessed to call mom is willing to make me whatever food strikes my fancy, no matter the inconvenience (that being said, I do try to make it as convenient as possible).

My mom- my stay at home nurse, is such an inspiration to me, and I not only pray to God in thanksgiving for blessing me with such an example of love in my life, but that I can one day fill the shoes she wears and take care of my own children with this selfless love.
