The Taxi Driver

He woke up in the middle of the night, scared, his throat parched, breathing heavily, he got up and went to the balcony for fresh air.

He was trying hard to sink in what he had just dreamed of.

It felt almost real, the metro station, the taxi driver, the wild beast the driver turned into, and the sudden break!

What was that dream? He kept thinking.

A taxi driver picked him up near the metro station, on the way he transformed into some wild beast, and pushed him out of the moving taxi.

He had goosebumps thinking about it again.

Standing there, he looked back at his bed, lying there was his wife, sleeping with a frown on her face, and her arms coming out of the bed as if they were growing more prominent as the night passed.

Her presence made him feel a li’l better.

As the night went down, he started to doze off.

The next morning.

It was routine; he got up, dressed, had his breakfast, and left for work along with his wife.

They both worked at different places. Hers was on his way; he often dropped her.

On the way back, he would go alone usually as she had already left for home by then.

He dropped her today as well, said his usual, ‘I love you, will see you at home.’

“Be on time and, if possible, get the groceries from the supermarket. I will text you the list.”

“Okay”, he said and moved on.

The day passed with the casual workload; he forgot all about last night’s dream.

Around 7 pm, he walked down the stairs towards the parking lot. He met Amit on the way, and they both chatted for a while. Amit wanted him to go out for a drink, but he said No.

He knew Amrita would get furious. She doesn’t like his coming back late. Though he wanted to join Amit!

He reached his car and turned the ignition on. Once! Twice! Thrice! It was not working. Worried, he called up the nearest garage, it was not open.

He called his friends around his location to see if they could get him a mechanic. No one picked up. Nothing was of avail that day.

He was getting the Deja Vu feeling.

At last, he left the car parked on the roadside, locked it, and started to walk towards the metro.

He thought it over. He was okay with taking the subway; however, he was already exhausted today; he didn’t want to spend the rest of the journey standing up.

“Maximum, what could happen? The driver will steal from me, but he won’t turn into a beast. That was just a dream, an absurd thought.”

Reluctant as he was, he called a cab.

While he was waiting for the cab, he continued to move up and down the road. It was a lonely street in the industrial area, and rarely a vehicle crossed from there.

He doubted his decision and was going to call off the cab when the taxi arrived.

He did not even have to call the cab driver; it was like the taxi driver already knew that he was standing there.

In the dream, he never saw the driver’s face. However, this one came out to greet him and enquired if he was the one who booked him. The driver flashed a smile, asked him if he was okay, and said, “ I was nearby and came straight to pick you up.”

The driver asked him to get in.

Reluctantly he took the seat in the back. Ideally, he would have taken the passenger’s seat in the front.

He felt a sense of relief with the driver’s friendly smile, and together they started the journey towards his house. The driver continued to chat on the way.

He was making the small talk.

After a while, he turned serious and went quiet. The driver must have assumed that he was not interested.

Suddenly, he felt a strong push; he almost banged his head on the back of the driver’s seat. The car came to a halt, and the driver turned back and said to him, “I had that dream too.”

“You get into the car, and I transmute into a monster on the way and push you out of the car. I had that dream last night. Even I’m scared, but I am sure nothing like that would happen. It was just a dream.”

He wanted to ask the driver how did he know he had the same dream. But he was too shocked by his confession, and by the time he returned to normal, they were in the front of his building gate.

He got out of the cab, paid the driver, went straight inside and took the lift to the 11th floor. He didn’t want to look back again.

He was confused and relieved!

He rang the doorbell. Amrita opened the door, and he went in. Amrita’s cousin was sitting on the couch. He was finding it hard to breathe and wanted to tell Amrita everything, but he couldn’t even say a word when he saw her cousin.

He complained of a headache and went to bed without eating that day. Amrita was busy catching up with her brother. Even she did not bother much.

The next day, he got up and dressed up for the office. Amrita had taken an off. He went alone to work and took the metro.

That evening when he went home, Amrita was waiting for him. She made coffee, and he narrated to her the whole incident.

She was listening to it patiently. In the end, she told him that it must be a coincidence, and it has passed.

He heaved a sigh of relief!

Days passed, slowly, he forgot all about his dream.

Amrita never mentioned it again to him, and neither did he.

2–3 months had passed; life was going on, casually.

One Friday, he came home tired. Amrita brought coffee and snacks and played a movie on Netflix.

While they were watching, slowly, she started the conversation.

“ I went for groceries today.”, Amrita said.

“Alone?”, he enquired.

“Yeah, alone.”

“Why didn’t you wait for me? We could’ve gone together tomorrow. How did you bring up all the stuff? Even the lift is not working.”

“The driver you dreamed of. He brought up all the stuff.”

“ Who? Are you mocking me?”

“ No. It is nothing like that. I didn’t tell you before because I didn’t want to scare you. But the driver I told you about, who drops me home every evening from the past one year, he is the same one.”

“ What?” he asked, with his face getting red with every passing second.

“See, this was what I was worried about. I knew you would not take it normally. But you having that dream was just a coincidence. He knew you were my husband and told me about the dream the very day you told me about it.”

“But why would you take his taxi every day?”

“He does not overcharge and is available whenever I’ve to go somewhere, and he is honest.”

He didn’t know how to react. This was beyond his understanding. Why did he have that dream? Why of all the people he saw that driver in his dream when he never knew who he was? Why?

He thought his head would fall off his body if he didn’t stop thinking about it.

But he didn’t know what to do. He kept staring at the ground while Amrita went to the kitchen like it was nothing.

Two Hours Of Love

The truth is that I prefer a love in which we go out after our dreams and return only to share them two hours a day, but we do it wholeheartedly and with all our lives.
