University Usability Report

Carnegie Mellon University is a private nonprofit research university. It was founded by Andrew Carnegie in 1900. CMU is ranked within the top 100 educational institutions in the world. It is also ranked as number one in computer science.

When I conducted the research on the school website. The person I interviewed found the website to look simple to navigate. There wasn’t anything that stood out to her.

After discussing the issue with the interviewee, she mentioned that as she explored the site, she felt that the side menu seemed to complicate navigating through the site. The site already has many different little boxes of information, so she felt that the side menu was unnecessary given the fact that the same menu was right at the top. Based on this research I decided to remove the side menu and enable the top menu to work as a drop-down menu. In order to make navigation easier, I think that the drop down will reduce the amount of visual searching throughout the site. The information is direct. This will reduce the amount of scrolling the user will need to do to find where they want to go.
