3 Things You Should Consider Before Giving to a Charitable Organization

A lot of us are naturally sensitive and generous by nature and will want to give the minute we see an ad that pulls our strings on the television. Others might see a charity organization they recognize and will automatically trust them and assume that they’re making a true impact on the ground.

The truth is that not all organizations are as dedicated or concerned for the people they are supposed to help. Many are run like companies and use public perception and manipulation to give the impression of change. But there are some charities out there that are actually doing some real change and are ready and willing to show receipts. Let’s take a look at some of the things you should consider before giving to a charitable organization.

One thing you should look at is how dedicated a charity is to a specific cause. This is because some charities will instantly pop up in times of tragedy, sometimes backed by very powerful entities or political figures, but have no knowledge of the actual cause and task at hand. The refugee crisis is a prime example.

Another thing you have to do is make sure that the charity is well viewed by watchdog organizations. These are responsible for making sure that they follow a certain code of ethics and that they’re using the funds correctly.

This is one of the sneakiest tricks in the book, and one too many unfortunately fall for. Some charitable organizations will purposely take a name that closely resembles another. People are then tricked into giving to an organization they don’t know.

Charity should come from the heart, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get the brain involved. Make sure that you do your research on any organization you give to, even if they seem to have the noblest of intentions.
