Random act of kindness

Kindness is Magic

I keep Saturdays for vendor visits. You know, the journey of the train is less crowded. Fewer crowd means I can get inside the train with ease. And, find at least 200 sq cm of space to stand with an independent overhead handle.

So, this morning I started my hour-long journey. Entered the 4th compartment comfortably. There is one unwritten rule of Mumbai local trains. In general & ladies compartments, despite the design of seats for 3 people, it is usual for everyone to squeeze in to accommodate the fourth person. Though, the fourth seat is uncomfortable. But, better than standing for an hour or more. But, some people on the third seat spread out their legs and makes it difficult for the fourth guy to find space. This is considered rude and sometimes leads to arguments.

Same happened today. On my return journey, after a tiring meeting and hot atmosphere, I wanted some comfort-ness. I tried to squeeze my bums on the fourth seat. But, the third guy, pushed me away, making it difficult to sit. I could have fought back. But, that would ruin the day for both of us. Hence, I chose to stand and let it go.

Halfway through the journey — my legs’ pain worsen. It might be clear on my face. The middle-seated guy from the same seat gave me his seat. First, I thought, his station has arrived. But, he kept on standing there. Seconds later, when I realized — he gave his seat to me. I thanked him for his kind gesture.

I am a young guy in my 20s — healthy and fit. Still, he gave me his seat — unusual thing; you know.

I don’t think the other guy was wrong. He chose not to squeeze himself for me. His choice. But, I am overwhelmed by this middle-seated man’s gesture. His act gives me a hope in humanity. Daily, we hear trivial fights and arguments in these trains. People unnecessary get into petty fights. Yet, there are people who care. It not only comforted my sore legs — but inspired me and others around.

Isn’t kindness magical? A simple gesture — yet so powerful. And, it creates ripples of more kindness and makes us more humane.
