TELL TO WIN Summary by Peter Guber

What if purposeful story telling, a learn-able skill, was sooo valuable that it could transform your personal and professional life for the better? Would you take the time to learn it? To master it?

How old is this skill of story telling? Probably as old as people, it is a core skill, fundamental to how we communicate & connect with others.

In our digital age there is a growing demand for this skill & method of communication.

Far to often people make a mistake in business, they communicate and attempt to persuade others through data dumps! Facts, logic, & benefits as presentations.

The problem with these data dumps is they often offer no emotional connection to the audience. How can you captivate someone’s attention with a monotone data dump soulless PowerPoint slide show? I’m sure it’s possible if the presenter is high energy, funny, and involves the crowd. However there is much simpler and effective way to get your message heard, story telling.

Speak from the heart, connect to the hearts. I understand how you feel, this is how myself and others have found a solution to feel better, to be better, and it’s so easy you can do it too.

People have to feel that your story is solving there problem. Story telling, when done properly will captivate the audiences attention, get them emotionally involved, be able to relate, and lead them to a call to action.

Win, win.

Great story telling also requires engagement, feedback. It is more of a dialogue, not a monologue.

How you listen as a teller is as important to your success as the actual words you speak. Listen with all your senses, gauging your audience’s emotions, attention & interest. Moment to moment. To have engagement, be engaged. The goal of active listening is for your audience to feel as if they are vital partners in the story experience.

The author of this book, “Tell to Win,” is Peter Guber. Someone that has quite an impressive resume of business success. He attributes this skill to be one of the secrets to his success. His proclaimed mission in the book is to be, to us the readers, a catalyst, and coach. Passing along tools & techniques from his own experiences as well as soliciting the wisdom from people he would consider master tellers. Demonstrating how when properly used the skill of story telling will immediately change your life!

In the book there is a lot of valuable nuggets of information to make you a more effective story teller. Each of valuable lesson or point to explained through a real life experience he went through or someone else did. Rather than tell you a bunch of stories, I’ll give you the most potent valuable takeaways from the book. A lot of these lessons are buried within stories, some of the stories seemed drawn out to me. Probably could of been 50 pages shorter and still delivered the same value.

Take away what is most valuable & useful for you. Find a way to incorporate what you learn into your personal & professional life.

So finally Here it is, “Tell to Win” by Peter Guber

I dove deep into this book, mining. Mining for treasure, valuable information for myself and you. Here is some of the valuable point, lessons, and takeaways I put together for you.

You want to have a great story, connect with people’s hearts. If your story connects to there heart, then there feet and wallet will follow. Don’t aim your story your audiences wallets.

In sales I've also learned the importance of a personal competency story. A short simple story “about me” to connect with people effectively & efficiently. Have your short & simple, yet valuable “about me” story always ready to go. You never know when you will encounter an important prospect, person, client, etc…

Own your backstory so it doesn’t sabotage you when you tell your front story. Also Confront the stories others are telling about you if need be.

Next….

When you are story telling you must captivate the audience. You must be dialed in, speaking with passion, truth, positive enthusiasm, & confidence. Be aware your body language is speaking as well as your mouth.

Arouse your listeners curiosity.

Get your self into the right emotional state, attitude is important. Have high energy.

Be strong in the message of the story but be flexible in your approach. If you want to connect to people’s hearts you gotta speak from the heart, having a repeatable scripted story. Be willing to go off script when the situation calls from it. Know your audience.

Surrender control of your story, your audience has to own it to tell it forward.

Demonstrate vulnerability, it is an asset.

We are pre-wired for story, we just need to turn it on. The marketplace, and people in general, crave & demand stories. Stories make facts & figures memorable, resonant, and actionable. Use this high demand to your advantage. Don’t think story telling is exclusive to show business, story telling is good business period.

In stories there is always heroes…

Heroes come in all sizes & shapes. Hero can be a teller, listener, product, a customer, a location, etc. Chose the hero that fits your goal. Get your audience to step in the shoes of the hero.

Aim for the heart of the goal, emotionalize your offering. Lead with your heart, not your head. Be interested in what interests your audience. Then your audience will find your story interesting and your goal/offering compelling.

The context in which you tell your story colors the story you tell.

So what’s a purposeful story?

A purposeful story is a call to action. A story without structure leaves your goal unfulfilled.

Start by crafting the beginning to shine light on your challenge or problem. Then, shape the middle around the struggle to meet that challenge. Then end with a resolution that ignites your call to action within the listener. Be sure to tell your story so the audience clearly sees what’s in it for them.

When telling your story metaphors & analogies are good for the imagination however firsthand or witnessed experiences is the best raw material for your story.

Your stories moment of Truth is when your audience hits a breakthrough climax, an AhHa moment. The moment when your listener experiences the same charge of emotion, purpose & meaning that you felt when you experienced your original epiphany. If you can connect with your audience of this emotional level, your call to action will be flawless & effortless.

Empower your audience to tell your story moving forward. Create a multiplier effect. Find a core audience who believe in your message, cause, product, etc… Encouraging them to tell your story though there own words & experiences.

Purposeful story telling is a skill to aid you in advancing your career and personal life. Tell purposefully tell effectively, tell to win.
